40 lbs!

Wow, I have finally made it to the big 40! I officially feel like I have done something hard :)

Well, today is 4 day of my 11 day diet. I am pretty proud of myself for doing as well as I have - but I have slipped. So, things could be better - but I will take what I can get.

I am a little bummed this morning - I have been weighing myself every morning to give myself incentive to keep going - cause sometimes it gets really tough and my lazy ass starts to think that backsliding won't hurt too bad... Well to the point, Tuesday morning I lost 1 lb, Wednesday morning I lost 2 lbs, and this morning I gained a pound. So, I am wigging out because things aren't "perfect".

I will get over it. But, I do really really hope that when this 11 day menu is up that I won't gain the weight back faster than I can blink.

So, I am sitting here telling myself to relish on the good things and keep going. That's how it's done... right?

Hey Abi,

I randomly stumbled upon your blog, and I rather enjoyed the whole idea of what you are trying to accomplish, and how you are going about it.

I myself went from 355 pounds to 250 pounds (250 is still high, but I'm 6'5.5" and have a massive frame), although I was 20 at the time, so it only took me about 4 months. I was losing between 6-8 pounds a week, and I did it purely with diet and exercise, but those numbers are abnormally high and I am in no way saying you could be doing better. I'm just giving some background =)

You mentioned that you weigh yourself every morning, and on this particular blog I read you gained a pound (and were subsequently upset about it). I don't think that's a good practice if the numbers are what make you feel good about yourself/your diet, although I admittedly did the same.

Concentrating on your newly found energy levels, the feeling of being in control of your life, and all that other good stuff is a far better source of "feeling good," however; The numbers are an easy, direct, and measurable indication of your progress, and are oh-so-hard to 'let slide' when you gain for some reason.

So with all that, I'll (finally =P) get to my point. You gained 1 pound. 1 pound of what? It could be anything! I was losing up to 8 pounds a week, but some days I still gained weight. Measuring my weight every morning was harming me more than helping me, because I saw it as a black and white answer to "did I fail again?"

We all know exactly what we do in a given day, and I knew exactly what I was putting into my body as well as exactly how much exercise I was getting. I didn't know if the actual diet was any good, but I knew I was giving it 100% and some days I still felt bad simply because I looked at the scale and gained weight... so I thought about it, and realized something.

I realized there is no difference in seeing myself lose 1 pound 3 days in a row, and not looking at the scale for 3 days and realizing I lost 3 pounds. Doing this meant that I know how successful my week was, as opposed to my day. If I gained weight for 2 days, then lost weight for 3, I would see that I made some progress and be happy about it.

If you stay true to your diet, and measure your progress on a weekly basis, I would be surprised if you found yourself gaining any weight at all until your diet is complete. It's just a matter of looking at it from a slightly higher level perspective. At least it helped me out =)

Anyway, I wish you the best of luck with your diet. I understand you're a middle aged mother of two (or so I read), and I'm a young male with a lot of natural muscle (big frame, (assumed) higher metabolism, etc), so I hope nothing I said was naive to that fact. Don't compare your numbers to mine, or anything like that. Just keep on going down your own path at your own pace, and remember the diet isn't permanent.

Pat - You are 100% right. I tend to focus more on what I am doing incorrectly than I do correctly. When it comes to losing weight I want everything to be by the book. Which, I know that expectation is very far from reality. But, thank you for the reminder - that is why I have this blog to begin with!
